Course Description:
This course will provide students with an overview of the subject areas and theoretical perspectives in the field of psychology. Topics covered include research methods in psychology, biopsychology, learning, memory, stress, social behavior, personality, and psychological disorders.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to describe psychology as a discipline and explain why it is scientific.
- Students will be able to list the primary goals of psychology.
- Students differentiate between the two learning theories of classical and operant conditioning.
- Students will demonstrate mastery of the different approaches to psychology including the psychodynamic, humanist, biological, socio-cultural, cognitive, and behaviorist perspective
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, a student will:
- Account for and appreciate the relationship between sensation and perception, and how these are influenced by motivation and emotion
- Understand and account for the various approaches to the study of psychology
- Specify how the principles of psychology can be used in solving everyday problems
- Evaluate, analyze, and acknowledge awareness of the experimental literature and generalizations
- Ascertain and be more critical of what he/she/they is
- Understand, analyze, and differentiate between behavioral phenomenon as they relate to other social sciences
- Acknowledge awareness of the various approaches to learning and understanding the relationship between the principles of psychology and self so as to better understand one’s roles as it relates to the environment
- Recount and appreciate how social and psychological behavior develops from childhood
- Acknowledge awareness of how behavior disorders are diagnosed and be able to grasp the basic reasoning behind the methods used to help individuals with these problems

Course Requirements
Class Activities
Active participation in the course is an essential part of the learning experience. You will be completing an in-class assignment eight times during the semester. All class activities will either be turned in during the class period or by the next class period and instructions will be provided. These activities and assignments are designed to help you actively apply and interact with the concepts learned during the lectures.
Class Activities account for 40% (40 points) of your final grade (Each in class activity is worth 5% of the total grade which is 5 points each). Activities will need to be submitted via Canvas.
Discussions/Attendance
Attendance will be taken during each class for a total of 33 classes excluding a holiday and the final. During each class, we will engage in some discussion about the topic for that class and it is expected that you participate and contribute in order for all students to learn from each other. Each class is worth 1pt for attendance and discussion participation which totals 33 points, however 30 points will be considered 100% for discussion/attendance to allow for some flexibility. If you attend all classes and participate actively, the 3 additional points will be considered extra credit.
Discussions/Attendance account for 30% of your final grade (1 point per class).
Critical Thinking and Personal Application Questions - Written Assignments
There will be 5 written assignments due based on the Critical Thinking and Personal Application Questions that can be found at the end of each chapter in the textbook. Due dates for each of the assignments can be found below in the class calendar. You may pick 2 critical thinking questions and 2 personal application questions from the list at the end of each chapter to answer. Please use full sentences and provide typewritten responses. Written Assignment 1 will cover Chapters 1-4. (There will be a total of 8 Critical Thinking Questions and 8 Personal Application Questions for Written Assignment 1). Written Assignment 2 will cover Chapters 5-7 (There will be a total of 6 Critical Thinking Questions and 6 Personal Application Questions), Written Assignment 3 will cover Chapters 8-10 (There will be a total of 6 Critical Thinking Questions and 6 Personal Application Questions), Written Assignment 4 will cover Chapters 11-13 (There will be a total of 6 Critical Thinking Questions and 6 Personal Application Questions), Written Assignment 5 will cover Chapters 14-16 (There will be a total of 6 Critical Thinking Questions and 6 Personal Application Questions). Written projects account for 20% of your final grade. Each written project is 4% of the final grade for a total of 20 points or 4 points each. Assignments should be submitted in Canvas.
Exams
There will be 2 exams over the course of the semester that will be non-cumulative and will cover materials from the readings and lectures. One exam will take place following the first half of the semester and the second exam will take place during the second half of the semester. Each exam will consist of multiple-choice questions and the dates of the exams can be found in the class calendar. The first exam will cover Chapters 1-8 and the exam will be given on the date of the final exam for the class and will cover Chapters 9-16.
Exams account for 10% of your final grade (10 points total). Each exam is 5% of the final grade (5pts per exam).
Attendance Policy:
Please come to class! You do not need to email me every time that you miss a class unless you have a specific question. Please note that if you miss 6 or more consecutive classes, you will be dropped from the class.

Students are expected to adhere to the Cerritos College Standards of Student Conduct, including the Academic Honesty and Behavior Expectations. If a student engages in any potential violation of these Codes, the student may be subject to Student Discipline Procedures. Extra credit opportunities will be announced throughout the semester. Please be sure to contact me directly if you are interested in extra credit opportunities.
Late Submissions
If you are unable to complete an assignment by the deadline, please contact me at least 24 hours prior to the deadline. Late assignment point/grade deductions may occur depending on how late the assignment is. Please be sure to discuss any possible late assignments with me directly.
Reflections, Discussions, and Assignments – All assignments, discussion, reflections etc. are to be turned in by the next class period.

CAIR
The Crisis Assessment, Intervention, and Response (CAIR) Team is a centralized group that facilitates case management for students experiencing crisis, distress, or other challenges related to their personal, physical, psychological, or emotional wellness. The CAIR Team ensures coordinated services and referrals for students and an individualized approach. Students may also submit a CAIR referral if they are concerned about another student, whether it is about their wellness, or for concerning, unusual, or threatening behavior.
