This course is designed for all students and provides in depth knowledge about Self Defense. Students will develop skills in situational awareness, expand knowledge about Martial Arts, develop an understanding about Self Defense within the guidelines of California State Law, acquire skills in attack response, close range/far range combat, pressure points, falling safety, escape techniques, and safe training practices.

Student Learning Outcomes

 

Students should be able to:

 

  1. Demonstrate proper ready position and physical defense techniques for various attacks
  2. List strategies for staying safe on a date

 

Student Course Objectives:

The student will:

  1. Explain the history and theory of Self Defense
  2. Explain the difference between Self Defense and other Martial Arts
  3. Explain limits of Self Defense according to California State Law
  4. Demonstrate techniques for eliminating dangers from daily living
  5. Demonstrate methods for recognizing and avoiding dangers in the home, car and public
  6. Explain methods for employing physical defense when necessary
  7. Demonstrate boundary setting; verbal and physical
  8. Demonstrate skills and strategies for employing physical defense when necessary
  9. Perform proper warm up, cool down, and stretching exercises
  10. Learn proper technique for offensive and defensive physical skills
  11. Practice proper techniques/drills for offensive and defensive physical skills from mount and guard positions
  12. Identify positions of advantage and disadvantage and implement various control or passing techniques during sparring
  13. Execute various strikes and submission techniques from mount and guard during sparring

 

Classroom Procedures:
The class will include the following:
1. Lecture videos

  1. Dynamic warm-up exercises
    3. Striking, blocking, throwing, falling, escaping etc.
  2. Weapons training (Tactical pen, knife, etc.)

 

Supplies Recommended:
Clothing and workout gear must allow for freedom of movement and flexibility.  Comfortable shorts and shirts are recommended.  Nylon bicycle shorts underneath shorts are also recommended. Comfortable shoes will be worn during class.  Sparring equipment (boxing gloves, padded feet, mouthpiece, and head protection) is not required for students.

Computer & software requirements

Students enrolling in this online course must have basic skills and knowledge of computers, keyboard function/typing, and internet practices.

  • Students must have access to a computer with internet access, google Chrome web browser, a school email account, and Microsoft Office 2010 or later software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Course communication

This course relies on asynchronous communication. You will be expected to:

  • Interact respectfully and constructively with peers
  • Post ideas and share feedback in the “Discussions” section of Canvas

Class readings, assignments and activities

All readings will come from your Chapter presentations (available in Canvas course files). Assignments and activities can be found in your assignments section in Canvas.

Attendance and Participation

Students are expected to participate and be actively involved in all class activities. Attendance is required in this course.

  • Students who do not access their Canvas course within the first week will be dropped as a “no show”
  • Students must complete “Syllabus” quiz the first week or they will be dropped
  • Student’s must participate in the “Meet and greet” discussion board during the first week of class or they will be dropped
  • Students must be available to watch pre-recorded Conferzoom lectures, and participate in class activities discussions, quizzes and assignments
  • 2 consecutive weeks of non-participation may lead to the student to be dropped from class
  • Students are expected to submit all work on time unless prior arrangements have been made (failure to submit work by the due date will result in a zero for the work).
  • Student-athletes must make prior arrangements if missing an exam or a day when an assignment or discussion is due.

Exams and Quizzes

  • Students who miss their exam or quiz on the scheduled day will not be allowed to make up the exam or quiz unless arrangements were made prior to their missed quiz or exam.
  • Missing an exam or quiz without prior notice will result in a zero.
  • In the event the instructor allows a make-up exam, it must be completed at the times made available by the instructor within 7 days of the test or no points will be awarded.
  • Students will be responsible for all class materials, which include lectures, discussions, assignments, and readings, even if the material is not covered directly in the traditional classroom or online.

Assignments

  • Students will receive a zero for all work that is not submitted by their due date. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS COMMUNICATED WITH THE INSTRUCTOR PRIOR.
  • All assignments and projects are expected to be typed, double-spaced, no less than 12 pt font, 1-inch margins, contain the student’s name, date, and title of the assignment, and provide page numbers if more than one page.
  • Assignments are expected to be turned in on their due date.

  1. Instructional Video Project
  2. This assignment is designed to provide students an opportunity to analyze, explain demonstrate specific Self Defense techniques using the “Tell, Show and Do” method. Students will upload their vide to YouTubeThe instructional video is worth a total of 100 points
    1. Techniques
      1. Wrist grab 1, 2 & 3
      2. Front choke
  • Wall choke
  1. Escape from mounted position
  2. Escape from guard/victim position
  3. OC Spray and Tactical light draw
  • Tactical pen strikes and defense
  1. Each student must demonstrate his or her knowledge and competence of the techniques listed above.
  2. Video instructions - Create an original YouTubevideo that teaches viewers about (1) movement skill
  • Your video must include an explanation of each skill listed above
  • Demonstrate the exercises
  • The video must be a minimum of 8minutes and cannot exceed 20 minutes. Fifteen points will be deducted if the video does not meet the minimal time requirement or exceeds the allotted time.
  • Students are encouraged to use and create graphics, images, and props to enhance their instructional video.
  • Plagiarism of any kind will result in a zero for the video project.
  • You Tube website: com(Links to an external site.). If you do not have a You Tube account, then you must create one before submitting your video.
  • Each student is responsible for removing the video link from YouTube after evaluation.

  • Go to youtube.com
  • Create a YouTube account & sign in
  • upload the video from your camera/phone to your computer. Before you upload the video to YouTube, make any edits that you would like, and then make sure that it is converted into a proper format. There are a wide variety of programs and websites that can convert video for free.
  • Click the Upload button on the top of the homepage. It is located to the right of the Search bar. Then click "Upload video" in the menu that appears.
  • Choose a video file. Click the “Select files to upload” button to open a file browser. Find the file or files that you want to add. You can also drag and drop videos into the square in the web browser window.
  • Click the Open button. If your account is unverified, you are limited to 15-minute uploads.
  • Enter the details. Required information includes the title of the video, the description of the video, and any tags that you want to add.
  • Choose Privacy settings. Public videos can be searched for and viewed by anyone. Unlisted videos are only accessible to people who know the video link. Private videos are unlisted and can only be viewed by viewers that you designate. These users need to have a Google account to access the video.
  • Hit Save. Your title, description, etc. will be saved when your video has completed uploading. When the bar fills, you have posted a video on YouTube.

    2. Students will post a meaningful and thorough reply to their peers (20pts each)

 

The final grade will be based on the following percentages

 

A 100-90%

B 89.9-80%

C 79.9-70%

D 69.9-60%

F 59.9% and below

Harassment of bullying of other students will be subject to immediate disciplinary action. Cheating, including plagiarism, will not be tolerated.
