Meet Your Instructor: Joseph Celis M.S. C.S.C.S.
Joseph Celis, MS, CSCS, has had the privilege of serving his community for over 25 years in many capacities and the honor of being a professor and educator in the field of Kinesiology for several ethnically and socio-economically diverse colleges in Los Angeles and Orange County. Joseph has taught numerous courses in Exercise Physiology, Sports Nutrition, Nutrition and Fitness, Introduction to Kinesiology, Older Adult Health and Wellness, Balance and Mobility, Yoga, Kickboxing (Muay Thai), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense.
Joseph earned both a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on Strength & Conditioning and Periodized Program Design and his Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on Sport Psychology from California State University, Fullerton.
Joseph holds Certifications/Ranks in the following: Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA), Olympic Archery Instructor (National Field Archery Association), Certified Wilderness Survivalist & Tracker (Tom Brown Tracker School), Certified Wilderness First Aid, Muay Thai, Jeet Kun Do, Tae Kwan Do, Brazilian Jujitsu, Gold and Silver medals in United States National Archery Championships.
Joseph also had the privilege of proudly serving his community as a Police Officer for the Los Angeles Police Department and the Anaheim Police Department. His experience with Law Enforcement sharpened his skills in leadership, critical thinking, and his already well-honed ability to communicate with individuals from all walks of life.
Joseph is the Director & Co-Founder of S.A.G.E. Holistic Health and Wellness Center and is passionate about instructing classes in Self Defense, Holistic Health, Nutrition, and Spiritual Development. Additionally, he has extensive knowledgeable and experience in Physical Training where he has made in a difference in hundreds of individuals’ lives and for a wide range of clientele. Joseph specializes in post rehabilitation, Strength and Conditioning for athletes, Martial Arts coaching (Muay Thai, Jeet Kun Do, Knife Defense, Archery etc.) and weight loss for obese individuals.
In addition to these areas of focus, Joseph has also studied world religions and participated in several cultural and spiritual practices throughout most of his life where he has sharpened his ability to utilize this knowledge and his spiritual practice to help others find their own path in life through Life Coaching with an emphasis on spiritual direction.
Course Description:
This course is designed for all students and provides in depth knowledge about Self Defense. Students will expand their knowledge about Martial Arts, identify Self Defense techniques acceptable by California State Law, develop skills in situational awareness, acquire skills attack response, close range/far range combat, pressure points, falling safety, escape techniques, and safe training practices.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to:
- Define Self Defense
- Understand limits of Self Defense according to California State Law
- Perform skills, including footwork, striking, blocking, throwing, falling, escaping, etc.
- Techniques for eliminating dangers from daily living
- Methods for recognizing and avoiding dangers in the home, car, and street.
- Recognizing patters for employing physical defense when necessary
- Boundary setting; verbal and physical
- Skills and strategies for employing physical defense when necessary
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate proper ready position and physical defense techniques for a front attack
- List strategies for staying safe on a date
Classroom Procedures:
The class will include the following:
1. Warm-up exercises and stretching
2. Strengthening exercises (sit-ups and push-ups)
3. Kicking, punching, blocking, throwing, falling, escaping etc.
4. Stance-work, ducking, weaving, bobbing, feinting, parrying, and evading
Supplies Recommended:
Clothing and workout gear must allow for freedom of movement and flexibility. Comfortable shorts and shirts are recommended. Nylon bicycle shorts underneath shorts are also recommended. Comfortable shoes will be worn during class. Sparring equipment (boxing gloves, padded feet, mouthpiece, and head protection) is not required for students.
Grading:
50 points – Practical midterm exam & scenario
50 points – Practical/written final exam & scenario
100 points - Participation/effort
200 points - Total
A = 175 to 200 points CR = 125 to 200 points
B = 150 to 174 points NC = below 125 points
C = 125 to 149 points
D = 100 to 124 points
F = below 100 points
Policy:
It is expected that the student will attend all or most of the training sessions. New skills are constantly being learned. Learned skills build onto new skills and a gradual progression is formed. A period of missed sessions will hinder the ability to develop the necessary skills for advancement. Communicate any problems of an anticipated missed period of training sessions with the instructor. You may be dropped after 4 consecutive missed sessions from my role sheet, however you must still withdraw/drop yourself with admissions. Make up classes can be arranged between the student and the instructor. There will be no cell phones used in class. Role will be taken promptly at the start of class during your warm up. After role is taken and you are late, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor that you are late to class to receive credit for that day. If you are more than 15min late to class, do not attend that day (you will not receive credit). 3 late attendances will result in 1automatic absence. 5 absences will drop your grade a full letter grade.
