Instructions
The activity will involve playing in a sandbox. Yay🎉! More precisely, playing in an augmented reality sandbox. Whaaat 🤯? This playtime should help you better understand how to read and interpret topographic maps.
Instructions
Part 1
- One person from each table goes to the augmented reality (AR) sandbox.
- Shape the sand into two large hills. Make one of the hills asymmetric (one side steeper than the other) - you’re a constructive geologic force! 💪
- Using your finger, erode a valley into the hill - you’re a destructive geologic force! 🤯
- On a separate sheet of paper, draw the hills from a map view perspective. Use 5 contour lines to represent the topography. Be sure that the contour lines reflect the valley and the asymmetry of the asymmetric hill. Upload this drawing to question 1.
- Once you've completed your drawing, ask your instructor to turn on the AR sandbox so you can compare your drawing to what you see.
Part 2
- Below, draw the two hills as if viewed from a profile perspective (cross-section). You may want to turn the page sideways (landscape view). Work with your classmates.
- Once you're confident you've satisfied the directions above, return to your desk but don't share your drawing until all of your tablemates have finished.
- Upload your drawing to question 2.
You have two attempts to embed your drawings and no time limit.
Time Needed
About 30 minutes.
