Complete the assigned readings to prepare yourself to answer the following questions. Read each question carefully and choose the best answer choice. Like the previous exercise, you'll be analyzing illustrations of plates and plate boundaries. However, these are presented in a cross-sectional view, not a map view. For a cross-section perspective, think of looking at a slice of layer cake, side-on.

Learning Objectives

  • Students can describe the geologic processes, the relative movement of plates, and the distinguishing landforms associated with each type of plate boundary
  • Students can describe the evolution of landforms and geologic structures in the context of constructive and/or destructive geologic processes
  • Distinguish between the terms tectonic plate (plate), plate boundary, and plate tectonics
  • Recognize Earth’s major surface features
  • Locate plate boundaries on Earth's surface
  • Explain the connection between plate tectonics and constructive and destructive geologic processes
  • Describe some of the evidence used to show the continents and tectonic plates move
  • Recognize the difference between the hypothesis of continental drift and the theory of plate tectonics
  • Use algebraic equations to calculate rates, distances, and times
