Glaciers Topographic Map Lab Assignment

Make sure you have read the textbook and watched the videos.  You will use two topographic maps below.  The Mt. Tom topographic map is from Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Valley glaciers carved the topography.  The Kingston, Rhode Island topographic map shows features that were formed by a large continental glacier in the last ice age.

1. What is the contour interval on this map? 

2. Find Four Gables near the southern edge of the map. Just north and south is a patch covered with blue contour lines rather than brown ones. What do the blue contour lines indicate on a topographic map? 

3. What is the elevation at the summit of Mt. Tom?

4. The Gable Lakes occupy two valleys. Note that between them is a sharp, steep sided ridge. What type of landform is this ridge?

5. Find the little town of Sheelite in the Pine Creek Valley. What is the shape of this valley in cross section?
